etisalat unifies international roaming rates posted on 09/02/2010
etisalat has launched an all new simplified approach to roaming prices for worldwide destinations based on zones. etisalat's revamped international roaming charges for outbound roamer are now unified and a flat rate will be applied according to the new roaming zones and new rates.
This enhanced service means that etisalat's customers can benefit from unified rates when sending any SMS or receiving voice/video calls from anywhere; or making voice/ video calls to local and UAE destinations, while abroad.
They will enjoy unified call rates across specific international zones, without any hidden additional tax or operator charges added to the call tariff. For easier reference and usage control, the roaming zones have been geographically categorized into 3 travelling destinations as logically observed. These are: Gulf Countries (GCC), Other Arab Countries and Rest of the World (ROW).
The new roaming structure will see standard rates applied for calls made from or received between the travelling destination and UAE. It will also aid and motivate customers to receive any incoming call due to better affordability than making outgoing calls, thereby staying fully connected with their families or business who want to get in touch with them from UAE or across the globe.
Additionally, Wasel outbound roamers can make out-going non-direct calls to local destination or UAE, in countries where direct roaming is not supported by simply dialling *111*(phone number)# and clicking on ‘Send', all calls charged as per the new simplified tariff. GSM post-paid outbound roamers will benefit extra from reduced roaming rates. - Emirates News Agency, WAM

etisalat debuts Collect Call service in the UAE posted on 08/02/2010
etisalat customers and telephone users in the UAE can now enjoy etisalat's newly introduced and innovative 'Collect Call' service, conveniently designed to make it easier for customers to connect with friends and family with calls charged to the call receiver.
etisalat Collect Call service can be used when it is simply preferable for the receiver to pay for the call.
The Collect Call Service has been designed so that callers can make direct voice contact with etisalat customers anywhere in UAE when they need it most, without being charged for the call. All etisalat customers are automatically enabled to utilise this service without any extra charge, subscription process or fee and facilitates any mobile device to use this service.
etisalat Collect Call allows users to call only mobile phones within the etisalat network across the country. Customers can call from any telephone within the etisalat network, be it mobile devices, fixed lines or payphones. The recipient then receives a voice message asking them if they are willing to accept the call, upon which they will be charged the normal tariff on call acceptance. Customers using the service also enjoy additional features that help them manage the service with more menu options.
To call any etisalat mobile phone through Collect Call, customers calling from their mobile phones have to simply call *132*05xxxxxxxx#, followed by 'call' key on their phones. Fixed line, mobile and pay phone users availing of the collect call service, can do so by dialling 132 and following the recorded voice instructions.
etisalat's Collect Call helps etisalat customers to stay connected with their families at any time without the worry of recharging, or in case they run out of talk time or need to call from a '0' blocked fixed phone.
To enhance privacy and selectivity in receiving calls, etisalat has developed advanced features for users to manage and control the service by customising it to their needs. This includes the following: - 'White list' option for customers to receive incoming collect calls from selected callers, automatically.
- 'Black list' option for mobile numbers that are not allowed to call them using the collect call facility and those calls will be rejected automatically.
- A third option is the convenience to 'black list' all numbers except the ones on the 'white list'.
Customers can manage these options by calling 132 or dialling *132# or by simply visiting http://www.etisalat.ae/collectcall to follow directions and avail of the service. "The flexibility and choice of adding or deleting numbers from the white and black lists makes etisalat's Collect Call service flexible because situations may demand such actions, and that is another advantage the service offers its users," he added.
Users can make unlimited use of the collect call service. However, for a collect call rejected more than three times from a particular recipient, the caller's collect call service will be suspended for 24 hrs for that recipient only, while he can continue to make normal calls to that recipient or a collect call to any other Etisalat mobile customer. - Emirates News Agency, WAM

du's one-fil-a-second global landline rate posted on 04/02/2010
Residents across the UAE will be able to subscribe to a prepaid service on their existing landlines to avail international calling at rates as low as one fil per second, said du yesterday.
The service will be offered to both etisalat and du fixed- line subscribers as an add-on pack without affecting the existing packages consumers have with the operators, Farid Faraidooni, Chief Commercial Officer of du, told Emirates Business.
"We are creating an offering that gives value to the customer and us," said Faraidooni, adding: "Since we started du, we have always committed that we would go to market with innovative solutions and value products. This is just a continuation [of our strategy]. We want to go beyond providing basic services."
Faraidooni clarified the service was being offered through the interconnection pact it shares with etisalat, called Carrier Select, and therefore there would be no revenue sharing with their competitor for calls logged from etisalat landlines. "This service is based on Carrier Select that allows either customer to switch to the other network for a specific purpose. There will be no revenue share," he said.
Speaking about the obstacles faced in implementing this unique offering, Faraidooni told this newspaper that the operator faced no real challenges on the technology and integration fronts.
"The real challenge will be in helping consumers understand the service. In this region, we are used to prepaid services mobiles. This is very unique and hasn't been tried in any other region, so the difficulty is to make them understand how to use a prepaid service for landlines," he said.
To increase awareness and grow subscriber numbers for the service, du will launch a traditional national media campaign today across print, outdoor, radio and web platforms. However, the telecom operator will also adopt a more aggressive, countrywide, one-to-one awareness interaction with residents through the strategic placement of product executives in malls and high streets, he said.
The new prepaid service coming into effect today offers 'one world one rate' tariff, which provides competitive international call rates from fixed landlines. Specially-designed homephone recharge cards will work on any home landline in the UAE, regardless of the provider, and will be made available in the denominations of Dh20, 50, 100, 200 and 500.
Through this service, customers will be able to call 190 destinations at rates varying from one fil to three fils a second. Customers will pay one fil per second during the night daily (9pm to 9am), including Fridays and three fils per second during the day (9am to 9pm). A rate of 1.5 fils per second has been set for Fridays from 9am to 9pm.
To activate the service, subscribers need to call 800135 from any home landline. Activation will only take a few seconds. Upon activation, subscribers will receive Dh5 as instant free credit. To make calls, subscribers will have to dial the prefix 08888 before the number they wish to call.
"After your first-time activation, you will basically have a wallet on your landline. Every time you want to make an international call, you simply dial the prefix and the intended number. Readers must note that by adding this service to your landline you are not deactivating your existing line. That continues as it is and you continue with your existing line and monthly subscription," said Faraidooni.
This implies that customers can continue to use their landlines for free calls to other landlines within the country and simply switch to this service when they choose to avail for cheaper international calling rates.
Customers, who prefer post-paid monthly plans, can sign up for the Homephone post-paid service with du. Postpaid subscribers will receive a free 08888-dialler device, which will be attached to the landline telephone and connect to the service automatically, without the need to dial the 08888 prefix manually. – Emirates Business 24|7

TRA likely to give operators free hand to fix rates posted on 26/01/2010
The UAE's telecom regulator is likely to allow operators to implement price changes and promotional offers without prior approval, a move which could lower mobile call prices which are among the highest in the Middle East.
The plan, if implemented, would eliminate the average five-day wait to approve special offers and would allow companies to respond to each other's offers faster, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said yesterday.
"This will motivate telecom companies to offer better promotions and increase competition for the benefit of the consumers," said Mohammad Al Ghanem, TRA Director General.
The plan is not expected to be implemented until the end of the year, or later, depending on market conditions and the results of the TRA's study of the services.
Sulaiman Aboulhosn, telecom analyst for Prime Securities, said the move to liberalise the market could result in lower calling rates.
"It's potentially significant but not drastic," Aboulhosn said. This will spur more competition." – Gulf News

etisalat study reveals fibre-optic network reduces carbon emissions by 85% posted on 20/01/2010
etisalat yesterday announced the results of a UAE-based study on the efficacy of fibre-optic next-generation infrastructure. The research showed that the amount of carbon dioxide produced could be cut by approximately 85% and that the energy required by the network could be slashed by up to 73% thanks to the new infrastructure that has been deployed across the country.
etisalat's investment in fibre-optic infrastructure not only provides futuristic services, it also significantly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide which is produced by communications activities from every individual and business within the country. Etisalat sees its deployment of fibre-optic technology as part of its corporate responsibility to gear the country with the best technology in the world, and also, to support a sustainable future.
The etisalat study compared 5,000 homes in the UAE which were connected by fibre-optic networks against homes that were serviced by Etisalat's legacy infrastructure. The study found that fibre-optic systems can transport different types of data over one cable and one network. In the past, cable TV, fixed-line telephony and fixed-line Internet each had its own infrastructure and power.
Today, etisalat's fibre-optic network provides all services across one platform eliminating two complete national networks.
Further, the fibre-optic system can transport data over much greater distances. The facilities required to manage the fibre-optic network need only be built at 12km intervals, compared with the legacy system which required a building or station to be constructed every 2.5km. Not only does this require less power and fuel to keep the buildings operational, but it also cuts down on maintenance and staff transport.
etisalat's fibre-optic network has been deployed nationwide and its engineering teams are now working door-to-door to connect every household in the country by 2011. To date over 670,000 homes have been visited and can now access the latest communications and entertainment services via a subscription to etisalat eLife. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
