Cabinet issues decision to regulate import of palm trees
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai issued a decision yesterday, regulating import of palm trees to the UAE. Article 1 of the decision empowers the Minister of Environment and Water to ban import of palm trees or plants from any country where cases of red palm weevil or any palm diseases are registered. Board of trustees of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm, has endorsed the basic system of the award. Entries for the award will open from June 1 to Sept. 30, after which the entries meeting the conditions will be sorted out.

The Khalifa International Award for Date Palm" was announced yesterday to be the biggest and the first award of its kind in the Arab region. The said award is aimed at developing agricultural and scientific research and studies on date palm. It also aims to stress the significance of the date palm tree in people's lives.

The UAE will compile an integrated, illustrated encyclopaedia on date palm as one of the signature symbol of the UAE national identity and culture.

Liwa - People wait for this time of the year to celebrate a member of their family - the date palm. The third festival of dates "Mezayna" ended on Saturday in Liwa, with winners being awarded for the best dates. Mezayna competition was held between two farmers as a tradition to celebrate the date season. Mezayna means beautiful in Arabic.

The third festival for dates, 'Mezayna' will end tomorrow by choosing the best produce from the farmers.
The festival is held yearly under the sponsorship of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs. A number of events are held during the festival such as exhibition of products, workshops, lectures and documentary films on ways to grow date palms.

Al Foah has received more than 64,000 tonnes of dates from farmers in the eastern and northern regions of the Abu Dhabi emirate since the 2006 date collection season started, according to an announcement of the company.  New collection system helps with date harvest

Following a new classification system for dates, farmers have delivered more than 1,000 tonnes of the fruit so far to receiving centres in Al Ain. Harvest season for the country's largest crop is in full swing and farmers have already starting delivering the fruit to Abu Dhabi's Al Foah company.
