The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), through its Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH), has recorded high numbers of falcon inspections and animal adoptions made as a result of its participation at the 2013 Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX).

The multi award-winning ADFH, the largest public falcon hospital in the world, was set up by EAD in 1999. Throughout ADIHEX, it showcased its initiatives, including its falcon inspection and treatment services, the long-running Sheikh Zayed Falcon Release Programme and the services on offer at its Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter.

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), said, "ADIHEX is the perfect venue for us to highlight the importance of sustainable falconry and ethical hunting. As a result of our participation, I believe that we connected with visitors and the community, and harvested pride among them in terms of the contribution made by the UAE to sustainable falconry practices and to the conservation of our biodiversity, heritage, and culture." Over the course of the four-day exhibition, the ADFH veterinarians who were present onsite conducted 113 health examinations on various types of falcons (Sakers, Gyr/Sakers, Gyr/Peregrines) for owners visiting the ADFH stand. The checks covered endoscopies, crop and faeces examinations as well insertion of PITs.

Additionally, cats and dogs from the Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter that were up for adoption were brought in to encourage visitors to apply for their adoption. 44 cats and 40 dogs (all of which are already neutered/spayed and vaccinated by the shelter) were successfully adopted by 82 families during the event.

Dr. Margit Muller, Director of ADFH, said, "Our presence at ADIHEX is something we look forward to year after year as it allows us to promote our services, and to connect with falconers and animal lovers. We are thrilled that we could demonstrate our capabilities in falcon care and help place these wonderful cats and dogs with families that will care for them the way they are meant to be cared for, which is in line with Abu Dhabi Government's support of animal welfare. We are already looking forward to what ADIHEX 2014 holds for us!" The ADFH is not only the largest public falcon hospital in the world, but also a very popular destination for tourists visiting Abu Dhabi Emirate. The multi award-winning institution has cared for more than 55,000 patients from the Gulf region since its establishment, treating and examining more than 7,000 falcons each year.

EAD's presence at the exhibition was aimed at highlighting several of the UAE's ground-breaking contributions to sustainable falconry practices, which included the Falcon Passport Programme, led by the Ministry of Environment and Water, which was launched to combat the illegal trade in falcons within the region, the Saker Falcon Artificial Nesting Programme EAD is conducting with the government of Mongolia, which includes a capability development programme for local biologists and grade 6 students in the UAE, and EAD's support of the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), whose mandate it is to protect bustards against extinction through breeding and careful management of their population. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
