A telethon was held yesterday as part of the open day to raise money for the Iraqi victims of war by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation. The 12-hour telethon, held under the slogan 'Our Kin in Iraq', was hosted by Dubai Television and Radio. It started at 2pm and ended late at night. Some Dh5.33 million had been collected by midnight. The campaign was held under the instructions of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence.

Talking to Gulf News, Ibrahim Bu Melha, Attorney-General, Chairman of the Holy Quran Awards and Vice Chairman of the foundation's Board of Directors said that they have drawn up an action plan to deliver aid to the Iraqis through charities operating in Iraq, with whom the foundation is already cooperating.

The foundation has also set up an operations room in their headquarters to accept donations.

The special donation collection centres allocated in Al Rashidiya Grand Mosque, Al Hamriya Central Souq, Union Cooperative in Safa area and the foundation's headquarters in Port Saeed Area saw many members of the public arriving to give what they could for the Iraqis. The public can donate to this cause either through the special donation collection centres or via the foundation's bank accounts. The accounts are: Dubai Islamic Bank (A/C No. 8570000) and National Bank of Dubai (A/C No. 0151511105). (The Gulf News)
