14 environmental projects on the anvil in UAE

In an interview to The Show Daily, Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Madfa, Health Minister and Chairman of the Federal Environmental Agency, FEA, highlighted the priority environment projects in the UAE for the forthcoming phase that includes 14 projects within the context of the environment strategy.



Al Madfa said The FEA board of directors has approved in its last meeting priority projects that represent the first phase of the environment strategy, The projects include the Zayed Project for Energy Research, the National Energy Research, the National Energy Committee's Project, Desalination Sustaining Assessment, Water Resources Integrated Management.



Revision of the legislations of the prevalent diseases, food safety and quality guarantee, modification of planning and construction system, promotion of cleaner production, the natural project for compilation of deteriorating agricultural lands and how to utilize them, protection of wildlife, establishment of organic fertilizer plants in municipalities, construction of a central plant for treatment of hazardous waste and survey of the biological diversification of marine life.



These committees are the marine environment, agriculture and land resources, pollution, urban environment, health and industry, water resources and energy committees. The energy committee has identified two priority projects: the Zayed's Energy Research and National Energy Committee Project.



The water resources committee submitted two projects - the first dealing with a project for the integrated management of water resources and survey and building of capabilities.



The water resources Committee, in coordination with the FEA, has been assigned to review the projects documentation along with the project for evaluation of desalination sustainability in the long run. The urban environment, health and industry committee chose four projects first, reviewing existing disease legislations which would be referred to the Ministry of Health for implementation.



The second project deals with guaranteeing food quality and safety as well as modifications of planning and construction systems and promotion of cleaner production. The Agriculture and land Resources committee suggested two projects for compiling deteriorating agricultural lands and wildlife protection.



The Pollution - air, water and waste committee presented three projects. These include development of administrative structures and human resources of environment administrations in municipalities. Another project is the establishment of organic fertilizer plants in municipalities as well as construction of a central plant for waste treatment.



The marine environment committee submitted a project for surveying the biological diversification of marine life, including the purchasing of a research boat. This also includes preparations to face drought and desertification as well as development of national human resources and increasing their academic qualifications and technical skills as well as enhancing environment awareness. More than 91 projects were proposed for gradual implementation covering four major areas notably preservation of natural resources, facing drought,' erosion and desertification and development of national human resources.



The minister added that the environment strategy will be implemented in coordination with different authorities in the country. The strategy includes seven chapters ranging from presenting information on the environmental situation in the country, population statistics and location as well as natural water resources plan, pollution issues especially air and water pollution and waste management.



The other chapters deal with marine, environment, urban environment, wasting of land resources and biological diversification, national environmental capabilities and environmental awareness.



AI Madfa said the bodies selected for implementing these projects will provide the funds through their annual budgets but the bigger projects that need higher budgets will be implemented in coordination with the public sector according to certain mechanisms. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
