Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, the 23rd meeting of the GCC Council of Ministers for Labour would open yesterday at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, UAE Minister of Labour said: "We are pleased the UAE is the venue of choice to host this prestigious meeting, at a time when the region and the world is confronted with challenging issues that require concerted deliberation.

"The Gulf States have achieved significant progress since the formation of the Gulf Co-operative Council, nearly 26 years ago.

The Council has come to be regarded a successful model for co-operation and mutual respect. This forum looks forward to supporting the achievements and efforts of the GCC with a unified focus on labour issues to match the expectations of our citizens." The GCC Council of Labour Ministers will discuss key issues on health and safety regulations for the labour workforce, and rising job opportunities for nationals in the GCC.

The Council will also review the findings of the 28th GCC Council for Undersecretaries of Labour that concluded yesterday, for future integration into welfare programmes that will benefit the entire GCC community. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
