31st National Day Statement by Umm al-Qaiwain Ruler

H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mualla, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm al-Qaiwain, said:”As the UAE celebrates its 31st anniversary of the federation, we welcome this occasion with utmost joy for what the union have brought to us in various achievements, which, our older generations before the existence of the federation, will see as impossible to achieve.

Sheikh Rashid added: "Our union begins its fourth decade in the new millennium, faced with several challenges, including the challenges of globalisation, which, we certainly believe, has come to stay. All indications show that the concerned bodies in the country are working hard with foresightedness in order to enable us to coexist with the demands of these challenges. This is to enable us reap the fruit of globalisation in trade and international relations, and to avert its negative repercussions. "The indications include the recent passing of legislations dealing with globalisation.

Another challenge is in the field of Information Technology and technological revolution, which turned the world into a global village and changed meanings and criteria by making illiteracy to mean lack of IT knowledge, regardless of whether one can read and write. But what calls for optimism is that all the concerned bodies in our federation are working very hard to consolidate this new knowledge.

The biggest challenge to our federal state is the increasing number of economic blocs in every part of the world. This has led to the emergence of forces which no small country or institution can face or withstand. The only way out is through the GCC strategy, which is moving steadily and confidently towards economic and customs union. A move we hope, would lead to a wider Arab economic bloc.

Another area of achievement for our federation is the area of environmental protection, which has now become a noble international ethic, which directs the steps and plans of the world. The Dolphin project through the Offsets Group, where national and Gulf natural gas are to be used as an alternative energy for generating electricity and for desalination of water, is aimed at this objective. This further boosts our hope for a more prosperous future in our quest for comprehensive development for our beloved country.

All these achievements and those to come, were the fruit of hard and sincere work by the country's leadership, headed by our wise and foresighted leader, president H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brethren, their highnesses members of the Supreme Council, Rulers of the emirates. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
