Beirut - The Joint UAE, Lebanese and UN mine clearing project has resulted in the clearing of 90 mine-infested fields in South Lebanon, it was announced here today. The fields which was cleared of some 11,000 anti-personnel mines, were handed over to the Lebanese authorities. Speaking at a ceremony organised to mark the occasion, UAE Ambassador to Lebanon Mohammed Hamad Omran Al Shamsi, said that the accomplishment of the first phase of such a great mission had made the UAE a partner in the liberation of South Lebanon. He said the project came into being as a result of a response to a national call by the UAE and in accordance with the directives of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Shamsi described the completion of the first phase as a major success which would be followed by more successes in the future. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
