AWO conference discusses woman's economic life

The second biennial conference of the Arab Women Organisation (AWO) discussed yesterday 'Globalisation and the status of women in the Middle East'.

A paper presented by the Secretary General of the UAE University Dr. Fatima Al Shamisi raised a pertinent question: Economic Globalisation: Did it strengthen economic security for woman? A number of academicians, thinkers and economists from around the world participated in the discussion.

The paper made an analytical look at the present condition of the woman in the Middle East, beginning from her literacy, education and her participation in the economic life.

The paper claimed that although woman in the Middle East has made several achievements in fields of education and healthcare, her participation in the economic life is much lower than that is needed.

Despite the economic openness, and the growth of the per capita income in the region, they did not translate into a positive result for the woman, and thus her role in the economic life suffered; the paper said. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
