A bright today and a brighter tomorrow

The United Arab Emirates is no doubt a success story in every sense. This country may be a young 34 -year-old state but so much has been done here that it makes many other older countries envious. The great stride the UAE has taken since 1971 is a unique success.

The federation, the fruit of the historic work done by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers the Rulers of the emirates, has always been cited as the most successful unity experiment in the Arab world. Of course, it is a source of great pride. However, the UAE has many other things to be proud of, including its unparalleled economic growth, which has made the country a shining example in this region and the subject of admiration and analysis around the world.

Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE is destined to lead in other ways. General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, was quoted last month as saying a major declaration on political reforms will be announced by the President within months.

As we celebrate National Day with pride for what has been achieved so far and be confident of an even brighter tomorrow, we cannot but feel an overwhelming sense of loss. For it is another national celebration without the presence of Sheikh Zayed. Nevertheless, everything we are celebrating today is what he had envisioned and spent every moment of his life working to realise. Today is another opportunity to pledge that we will ensure this great country shall only go forward, just as he had always urged us to do. (The Gulf News)
