A ride with nature in the UAE

posted on 01/04/2003: 1599 views

Every once in a while you experience the need to step out into the open, into the wilderness of nature. Thankfully, the UAE offers a number of recreational activities and sports and scenic locations where you can get away from it all and take a rejuvenating break from the hustle and bustle of city life. A group which seems to be making the best of what the emirates has to offer is Biking Frontiers, an informal group who describe themselves as "a social mob of passionate mountain bikers and outdoorsy types".

Set up by Canadian mountain biker Barry Sallenbach about nine years ago, the group of around 80 people meets each weekend to cycle across the rough and tough mountain terrains of the country. The Biking Frontiers have given interesting names to the different rides they go on: these include the Dead Camel Ride, Two Car Crash Ride and the Tandoori Knee Rides. The weather is a factor which determines how much they ride at a time. In winter, the group may cycle up to 75 kilometres in temperatures hovering around 10 degree centigrade.

In summer however, when temperatures shoot up to 47 degrees centigrade, they might stop at 10 kilometres. Humidity doesn't prove much of a problem, because at higher altitudes its impact is minimal. Invariably, February to March is the best time for cyclists. (The Gulf News)
