Abdullah Bin Zayed: Palestinian reconciliation requires an end to non-Arab interventions

UAE Foreign Minister HH Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his belief that the Palestinian reconciliation needs an end to certain interventions by some non-Arab countries.

These interventions are not acceptable and should end, said Sheikh Abdullah in a statement made on the fringes of the international conference being held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, in support of Palestinian economy and the reconstruction of Gaza.

"I believe that the brothers in Hamas understand well of the presence of some parties who don't accept this reconciliation as it damages their interests. I assert that we, as the Arab countries, are pushing forth towards achieving the reconciliation and leading the Palestinian Authority and President 'Abu Mazen' into success, as the Palestinian people have the right to live in peace and dignity under an independent authority and an independent state", Sheikh Abdullah said.

He added that it is evident from the progress of the conference that there is an international commitment for huge assistance grants, which I believe may exceed USD 3bn. This will largely cover the expenses of the reconstruction of Gaza after it was devastated in the brutal Israeli aggression on the Strip.

Sheikh Abdullah said that it is very important now to help our Palestinian brothers, at the head of whom are President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) and Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad.

We thank them for the fruitful work they did in the West Bank as well as the encouragement they gave the Palestinians to restore their unity and joint work instead of this unnecessary division between West Bank and Gaza Strip, Sheikh Abdullah said.

Answering a question whether he likes to address any appeal to Hamas movement, Sheikh Abdullah said: I believe that the brothers in Hamas are aware of the extent of the Arab and international commitment. They should perceive the success of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank as well the sufferings of our brothers in the Gaza Strip. I also believe that the brothers in Hamas are in need of way out from what they are in now. It is my faith that the exit lies in the present efforts of Egypt to lead the Palestinian-Palestinian reconciliation into success. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
