Abdullah Bin Zayed holds meetings with world leaders

UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan continued yesterday a series of bilateral meetings at the sidelines of the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meetings were held at the UN headquarters in New York.

Sheikh Abdullah met British Foreign Minister David Miliband, MP and exchanged with him political views on the developments of the Palestinian issue and the Middle East peace process, as well as the topics related to Gulf security including Iran's nuclear programme. They also reviewed the latest situations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In a meeting with the Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, Sheikh Abdullah reviewed a number of political issues of mutual concern, which included the Palestinian issue, the situation in Afghanistan and the efforts of the Friends of Pakistan Group for establishing peace in the region. They also discussed the bilateral relations between UAE and Canada and easing of visa formalities for citizens of both countries.

Both sides pledged to support the nomination of the two countries for the membership of the Security Council in the future.

Sheikh Abdullah extended an invitation to the Canadian minister to participate in the conference of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to be held in January next year in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Abdullah also met the Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar, who expressed his country's desire to enhance cooperation with UAE in a number of avenues, including the efforts to confront the challenges posed by the climate change.

They also discussed the stance of both the governments towards the Palestinian issue, the peace process as well as a number of other issues of mutual interest.

In a meeting with the Foreign minister of Senegal, Cheikh Tidiane Gadio Sheikh Abdullah discussed a number of political issues on the agenda of the ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which was held at the UN headquarters yesterday on the fringes of the UN General Assembly session.

The Senegalese minister urged the UAE to support his country in its efforts to mitigate the aftermath of the recent floods that hit Senegal.

Sheikh Abdullah also held a series of meetings with the Lithuanian foreign minister Vygaudas Usackas, the foreign minister of Luxemburg Jean Asselborn and the foreign minister of Netherlands, Maxime Jacques Marcel Verhagen.

Verhagen During a meeting with Joe Natuman, Foreign Minister of Vanuatu, Sheikh Abdullah received an official invitation to visit Vanuatu. Natuman expressed his country's desire to establish diplomatic representation in the UAE to cover the whole Gulf. He also said his country was willing to develop ties with the UAE in tourism and to start direct air route between the two countries.

Sheikh Abdullah discussed with Carlos Morales Troncoso, Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republics, arrangements for the visit he is scheduled to make to the republic next month.

In his meeting with Johnson Toribiong, Foreign Minister of Palau, Sheikh Abdullah welcomed Palau's desire to strengthen ties with the UAE and its intention to join IRENA.

Sheikh Abdullah met with Frederick Vaka'uta Sevele, Prime Minister and acting Foreign Minister of Tonga. He also met with the Foreign Ministers Marco Hausiku of Namibia, Jaime Bermudez Merizalde of Colombia, and Paul Toungui of Gabon and discussed with them ways to enhance UAE's ties with their respective countries.

He extended invitations to the Foreign Ministers of Colombia and Gabon to attend IRENA conference and future energy summit in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Abdullah met with Germany's special envoy to Afghanistan and discussed with him situation in Afghanistan and the efforts being made to improve security and stability there. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
