H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, while celebrating the U.A.E's 42nd National Day, said that this year's National Day celebrations "Represent an addition and a new start for our determination to proceed with well-established and strong steps to keep up with the national achievements that have been made in the last decades of the blessed Federal march." In a statement to Dira'a al-Watan Magazine (Nation Shield Magazine) on the occasion of the UAE's 42nd National Day, Sheikh Abdullah said, "On this day, our pride grows as our country has become at the forefront in respect of the countries that succeeded in achieving high rates of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and topping the list of the most advanced, prosperous and stable countries in the world, as well as classified high in the human development field, as the country achieves happiness and satisfaction for its citizens.

"The UAE has become, as a result of the comprehensive development and economic prosperity, a destination for all, tolerant and open to world cultures and peoples, meeting their respect with respect. It enjoys security and safety in light of laws that respect freedom of differences and diversities and treats everyone fairly before the law, which has contributed to the spreading of justice and respect of human rights, emphasising the State's keenness to consolidate the concepts of moderation," Sheikh Abdullah added.

Following is the full text of the speech of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah on the occasion of the UAE's 42nd National Day.

"The 42nd National Day celebrations represent an addition and a new start for our determination to proceed with well-established and strong steps to keep up with the national achievements that have been made in the last decades of the blessed Federal march.

On this day, our pride grows as our country has become at the forefront in respect of the countries that succeeded in achieving high rates of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and topping the list of the most advanced, prosperous and stable countries in the world, as well as classified high in the human development field, as the country achieves happiness and satisfaction to its citizens.

Today, we recall with pride and loyalty, the memory of the founders, led by the founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who led with wisdom and patience, the blessed march of nation-building, taking us to the prosperity, tranquility, security and stability we are enjoying nowadays.

The huge developmental achievements accomplished, under the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, enhanced and boosted the gains achieved by the nation and reflected the keenness of the leadership to provide a decent living, prosperity and progress for the citizens in accordance with the highest international standards, which put the UAE among the more developed and advanced countries, as it ranked the first among Arab countries, and the 19th globally in the Global Competitiveness Report 2013-2014, and to maintain for the eighth consecutive year, its position among the emerging global economies based on creativity and innovation.

The UAE has become, as a result of the comprehensive development and economic prosperity, a destination for all, tolerant and open to world cultures and peoples, meeting their respect with respect, and it enjoys security and safety in light of laws that respect freedom of differences and diversities and treat everyone fairly before the law, which has contributed to the spreading of justice and respect to human rights, emphasising the State's keenness to consolidate the concepts of moderation.

The U.A.E's record in the field of human rights saw great national achievements, a strong commitment and positive interaction with the international practices in this context. These achievements were crowned as the UAE, on November 2012, won membership of the UN Human Rights Council for a three-year term, starting from early 2013.

The UAE also ranked the first among Arab countries, and the fourteenth worldwide as per the Global Network for Rights and Development 2013 in the respect of basic human rights among the 216 countries around the world.

The foreign policy pursued by the UAE worked on supporting the gains of the homeland and promoting economic prosperity and social development. The U.A.E's diplomacy, thanks to the vision and guidance of its wise leadership, was able during the last years to make remarkable achievements with its positive and strong presence, open new areas of cooperation, and widen its political and diplomatic choices.

It has worked on building bridges of understanding and cooperation with all countries in the six continents, to serve its interests and strengthen its presence and its impact on regional and international levels, and to build strategic partnerships with various countries around the world. It has also worked with its allies and friends to help promote stability and development in the world.

In this context, the UAE participated in the meetings of the Group of Twenty for the first time in November 2011, as a responsible participant in the decision-making process at the international level.

The European Union in 2013 opened its first mission in the capital of Abu Dhabi, also this year, The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi, which is its first diplomatic mission in the Gulf and Arab world.

Also, the UAE was chosen to be the permanent headquarters for one of the vital organisations of the United Nations, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and as such the city of Abu Dhabi has become the first Arab capital to host one of the international organisations, and a world-leading centre, through the exchange of experiences and establishing joint ventures in the field of renewable energy with many countries of the world. The country has also made clear and distinct international efforts in the field of anti-piracy and anti-extremism in all its forms and manifestations, based on the UAE's interest to participate actively with the international community in promoting international peace and security.

The U.A.E's diplomacy is supported by a strong network of diplomatic relations with about 190 countries around the world, compared with only three countries on its establishment in 1971.

Humanitarian diplomacy formed one of the main pillars of our foreign policy, and our country has been active in carrying out its pivotal role in the relief and humanitarian fields, along with supporting the international efforts to confront crises and disasters, and to meet distress calls. The UAE has become a global model in providing aid, grants and soft loans to developing countries, so as to achieve sustainable economic growth.

In this field, the United Arab Emirates ranks sixteenth globally among the most generous donors of foreign aid, according to a classification issued by Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in April 2013. The volume of foreign aid provided by the state since its establishment on the 2nd of December 1971 and up to the year 2010, is more than 163 billion U.S. Dollars in the form of soft loans or non-refundable grants, while the aids, loans and grants provided by the year 2011, reached around 2.11 billion U.S. Dollars, with Dh 1.59 billion in 2012 to about 137 countries.

The national achievements that have been accomplished, thanks to our wise leadership and cohesion of citizens and their loyalty and confidence in their leadership make us proud, and put on our shoulders enormous responsibilities to exert more effort to continue the success and progress of this dear homeland.

In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere congratulations to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members Rulers of the Emirates and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, praying for Allah Almighty to return this occasion on our country and our people with security and well-being. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
