Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, said the long-standing relations between Japan and the UAE could develop to enable the two countries to become partners in the political and economic fields.

In an interview with a Japanese television coinciding with the current visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the UAE, Sheikh Abdullah urged Japan to play an active role in the Middle East peace process.

He also said that Japan should become involved economically in Iraq as well as making a symbolic military commitment to the international forces in Iraq.

Sheikh Abdullah said that Abe's visit emphasised the strong ties between Japan and the UAE. "Our trade with Japan grew last year by almost 25 per cent to around US$38 billion (Dh139.46 billion), and the UAE is one of Japan's top five sources of imports," Sheikh Abdullah said.

Sheikh Abdullah said: "We are focusing on improving the working and living conditions for expatriate workers in the UAE.

"Given the rapid growth rates of the past, some shortfalls were inevitable. We seek to remedy any shortcoming so as to ensure that all expatriates live in our country in dignity and safety," he added.

With regards to the international affairs, Sheikh Abdullah said: "We fully endorse Japan's desire to play a more active role in international affairs, and support the restructuring and expansion of the United Nations Security Council and giving Japan a permanent seat.

Commenting on the Iranian issue, he said: "The mixture of Iran's perceived political agenda with its nuclear programme causes a great deal of concern in the area, which needs the urgent attention of the Iranians." (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
