UAE Foreign Minister HH Abdullah Bin Zayed urged the international community, in particular the Security Council, the United Nations and the United States to carry out their responsibilities and put an end to the policy of double standards towards the Palestinian people.

He also asserted that the root of problem lies in the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the arrogance practiced by Israel.

Addressing a joint press conference along with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Joudah yesterday in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Abdullah expressed hope that the U.S. administration will fulfil the promises it had given the region and will consider them with utmost seriousness.

The press conference was held at the Foreign Ministry headquarters at the end of the first round of meetings of the UAE-Jordanian Joint Committee.

What is happening in Gaza gives us all a clear message about the need to end the Israeli occupation, Sheikh Abdullah said.

Sheikh Abdullah added, "It is easy to denounce the aggressions on Gaza, but the main problem is continuation of the Israeli occupation. Our Arab region will not live in peace if the occupation continues." Regarding Jordan, Sheikh Abdullah said Jordan is in a difficult economic situation, adding that the UAE and other GCC states were discussing how to help Jordan overcome the difficulties.

For his part, the Jordanian Foreign Minister said that his country was exerting efforts for pacification in Gaza and avoiding consequences of the aggression", referring to the need for coordination to immediately cease fire as the volatile region could not stand upsurge of violence.

"There is continuous Jordanian efforts to support brothers in Gaza Strip through the Jordanian military field hospital, and in addition to the relief convoys ordered by His Majesty King Abdullah bin Hussein of Jordan," he added.

Asked on effects of current tension in Jordan on the Palestinian issue, the Jordanian Foreign Minister said despite the tensions the Jordanian stance towards the Palestinian issue would not change as the Palestinian people have right to establish their independent state on their territories. "Our work now focuses on achieving the independence of Palestine and ending the occupation", he said.

Judeh noted that it was not first time Jordan undergoes such a difficult situation, indicating that Jordanians' awareness and allegiance to the leadership would enable them to overcome all the difficulties. "The Jordanian government has to take difficult decisions, among others, lifting subsidy on fuels, and in return supports a huge sector of Jordanian people," he said.

Sheikh Abdullah and Judeh had chaired the first meeting of the joint UAE- Jordanian Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE Foreign Minister commended the depth of fraternal ties between the two countries, referring to continuous growth in the economic and investment ties. He added that the UAE backs Jordan to help it achieve aspirations of Jordanian people.

For his part, the Jordanian Foreign Minister complimented the role of Sheikh Abdullah in bolstering the strategic partnership between Jordan and the GCC. He referred to the GCC US$5 billion grant to support the development projects in Jordan for five years.

At the end of the meeting, the two ministers signed the minutes of joint committee meeting, and Memorandum of Understanding for political consultations and coordination between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs in both countries for 2013- 2015. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
