Moscow - UAE Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussed today with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov the progress of bilateral relations between the two countries. They both expressed satisfaction at the positive outcome of the meetings of the joint governmental committee for commercial, economic, and technical/technological cooperation.

The Ministers affirmed that their countries held identical or convergent stances on the Middle East, Iraq, Lebanon, and GCC security. On Iraq, they both recognised the need for supporting the national unity government and urging all parties to renounce violence and work toward restoring stability in the country. Discussions between the two ministers touched also on the Iranian nuclear dossier.

Sheikh Abdullah arrived in the Russian capital last night and chaired this morning the UAE side to the joint Governmental committee, while the Russian side was led by Sergei Ohansian, Chairman of the Russian Federal Energy Agency. The committee included representatives from the ministries of foreign affairs, finance and energy, central bank and from major Russian energy firms.

Sheikh Abdullah described political relations between the two countries as good. He referred to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed's visit to Moscow last September when he was received by President Putin.

He underscored the need for signing a pact to regulate bilateral investment and stressed that the UAE had a strong desire to strengthen relations with Russia. He said the UAE side was not satisfied at the performance of the joint committee and expressed hope that it will be invigorated in future by setting up joint task groups to handle a host of issues, including long term investments.

Sheikh Abdullah said there were several issues that needed to be addressed, including investment rights, debts, sea transport, increasing air flights, cultural cooperation, accreditation of educational certificates, and exchange of missions, speedy processing of entry visas for UAE businessmen. "We want to expand cooperation beyond the military aspects to cover all areas," he said.

Ohansian concurred with Sheikh Abdullah's call for invigorating the joint governmental committee, which will hold its next meeting in April-May 2007 in Moscow, Ohansian backed the idea of creating a postal centre in the UAE to serve Middle east countries, and establishment of reciprocal exhibitions.
