Canberra - Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has laid the foundation stone for cyclone shelters and multi-purpose facilities in North Queensland, Australia.

In addition, multi-purpose facilities including stages, educational centres, social halls and sports centres will be built in the state at a cost of US$30 million (Dh110 million) as support from Abu Dhabi Government.

Andrew Fraser, Deputy Premier of Queensland; Jan Jarratt, Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business; a number of Australian officials; Ali Nasser Al Nuaimi, UAE Ambassador to Australia; and members of the delegation accompanying Sheikh Abdullah attended the ceremony.

Earlier when Sheikh Abdullah was still airborne, pupils from Brisbane Government School presented a colourful show on the ground making the name of the UAE in celebration of his arrival.

Sheikh Abdullah, during his visit to the school, reviewed designs of the shelters. He was also briefed about the damage done by hurricanes and floods that hit the state at the beginning of this year.

Fraser, in his statement, praised the Government of Abu Dhabi and in particular thanked Sheikh Abdullah and the UAE Government for the initiative, which will strengthen relations between both countries.

The shelters will be designed and constructed to Category 5 standard and provide protection to more than 500 people. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
