CAIRO: Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan led the UAE delegation to the 143rd meeting of the Arab foreign ministers, held yesterday at the Arab League General Secretariat in Cairo.

The UAE delegation included Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhaheri, UAE Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ahmed Al Jarmen, Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Dr. Abdul Raheem Al Awadhi, Assistant Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, Dr. Jassem Al Khaloufi, Director of Arab Affairs at the Foreign Ministry and Ali Al Shameeli, in-charge of the Arab League's affairs at the UAE embassy in Cairo.

The meeting, presided over by Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, discussed developments in the region, as well as preparations for the Arab summit, scheduled to be held on 28th and 29th March in the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh.

The new session of Arab League's Council of Foreign Ministers will have a 28-item agenda related to joint Arab action. High on the agenda is a seminar on 'maintaining Arab national security'.

The ministers reviewed a number of topics on the meeting's agenda, including the progress of the Palestinian cause, developments in Libya, Yemen and Syria, UAE's islands, peace and stability in Sudan, Somalia and Comoros, and the perils that Israel's armament programme poses to Arab and global security.

In his speech at the meeting, the Arab League Secretary General, Dr. Nabil Al Arabi, highlighted the need for a joint Arab security force, capable of carrying out several missions, including rapid counter-terrorism intervention, peace-keeping operations, protection of civilians and ensuring safe delivery of humanitarian relief. – Emirates News Agency, WAM –
