Abdullah bin Zayed meets senior Cuban officials

Havana - UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, met here yesterday Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Ruiz.

Present in the meeting were HE Reem Al Hashimi, UAE State Minister, HE Khalid Al Ghaith, Assistant Foreign Minister for the Economic Affairs, HE Yusuf Ali, UAE Ambassador to Brazil and UAE Non Resident Ambassador to both Cuba and Chile and HE Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Board Chairman of Dubai World Ports.

The Cuban official welcomed Sheikh Abdullah and the delegation. On his part, the UAE Foreign minister said the visit would contribute in establishing friendship and joint cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides discussed cooperation and ways of boosting it, particularly in the areas of economic and investment sectors, as well as role of businesspersons and issues of common interest.

Sheikh Abdullah thanked the Cuban government for supporting Abu Dhabi to host the International Renewable Energy (Irena) headquarters in Abu Dhabi. He called for air transport between the UAE and Cuba by allowing national carriers such as Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways to launch flights to different Cuban destinations and support Dubai World Port to invest in Cuba.

He referred to significance of striking of Avoiding Double Taxation and Encouragement and Protection of Investment Agreements, being vital for wooing investors.

The UAE and Cuba yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations between the Foreign ministries in the two countries signed by Sheikh Abdullah on the UAE side and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, on the Cuban side. The agreement aims at holding regular bilateral talks to boost the relations and exchanged views over the regional and international issues of common interest.

The two Foreign ministers tackled in their meetings the ways of upgrading the trade and investments exchange.

Sheikh Abdullah stressed in the meeting the need for promoting the bilateral relations, including exchanging cultural activities through holding Cuban Cultural Week in the UAE. The meeting also discussed joint cooperation in the fields of economy, tourism, developments of ports, renewable energy, energy and encouragement and protection of investments.

The UAE Foreign minister invited his Cuban counterpart to attend the preparatory meeting of the Irena.

The UAE and Cuba signed yesterday the Economic, Trade and Technical Agreement signed by Sheikh Abdullah and Cuban Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca the agreement aims at boosting cooperation in the fields of trade, industry, transport and investment.

The UAE Foreign minister stressed in the meeting the need for communication between the businesspersons in both countries to explore investment opportunities. He invited Pedro Al Varez, Chairman of Cuban Chamber of Commerce and a number of businessperson to visit the UAE. The Cuban side welcomed the UAE to invest in Cuba.
