London - UAE Foreign Minister H.H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has taken part in the opening of the one-day" Afghanistan: The London Conference" along with representatives of 70 nations including foreign ministers from International Security Assistance Force partners, Afghanistan's immediate neighbors and key regional player and representatives from NATO, the United Nations, the EU and other international organisations such as the World Bank.

The meeting aims to fully align military and civilian resources behind an Afghan-led political strategy.

Afghanistan will need international support for up to 15 years, President Hamid Karzai told the conference.

Karzai thanked the international community for its support and for the sacrifices of its troops and said the county was "slowly and surely making progress", calling the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin-Abul Aziz Al-Saud to interfere to reach reconciliation with Taliban.

The Afghan leader has demanded greater Afghan control over security operations in his country as he again questioned the international community's military and aid tactics.

British prime minister Gordon Brown said the conference "marks the beginning of the transition process" that will see "the Afghan people secure and govern their own country".

Brown stressed the gradual handover of control in some provinces to Afghan troops ... which could allow a reduction of foreign troops. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
