Santo Domingo, Managua - President Leonel Fernandez of Dominican Republic welcomed yesterday visiting UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Presidential Palace. The President of Dominican said his government lends special care to boosting bonds with the UAE given the prominent place the UAE has earned internationally.

President Fernandez and the UAE foreign minister exchanged views on latest regional and international developments and reviewed economic developments in both countries. Ways of enhancing joint cooperation in areas of economy, trade and investment were also discussed.

For his part, Sheikh Abdullah expressed the UAE's resolve to boost its ties with countries of the world through opening up avenues of joint cooperation under its balanced economic and commercial policies.

'We hope the air transport service agreement the two countries have signed recently would signal the opening chapter for a strong and close bilateral cooperation, the UAE minister said.

Later, Sheikh Abdullah toured the Port of Caucedo, the country's leading trade gateway, which is managed and operated by global marine terminal operator, DP World at a total cost of US$ 320 million. The 600 metre long container terminal can handle up to one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). 'The project offers a good example of distinguished cooperation between the two countries and helps the Dominican emerge as a competitive power in that region in terms of free ports and zones and tourism,” he said, lauding the success made by the DP World for bolstering UAE's relations with other countries of the world through its able management and operation of seaports around the world.

The UAE foreign minister then headed to Nicaragua where he had talks with President Daniel Ortega over issues of mutual interest and current regional and international events.

President Ortega highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relations in various fields. The meeting also explored the possibility of boosting joint investment between government and private sectors in the two countries in sectors like mining, energy and agriculture. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
