The Abu Dhabi Police held a seminar last night on bird flu, in conjunction with the regional office of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The seminar was attended by Major General Saif Abdullah Al Shafaar, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Interior in addition to a number of high-ranking officers and medical personnel.

Addressing the seminar, Dr. Abdul Wahab Abdul Razaq Al Jabouri, Head of Animal Resources Section at the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Agriculture affirmed that the UAE is free from any cases of the deadly bird flu. Dr. Jabouri, a member of the Japanese National Institute for Physiological Sciences, also pointed out that random surveys conducted by the authorities in Abu Dhabi emirate showed no evidence of any cases of bird flu.

Laboratory analysis of reported cases of sick or dead birds did not show any symptoms or evidence of bird flu, said Jabouri, adding that a national anti-bird flu strategy has been evolved with the participation of various government institutions and agencies. He noted that the agricultural sector in Abu Dhabi emirate, particularly the laboratories, are well-equipped as to discover the disease in less than 48 hours, thanks to the state-of-the art facilities.
