Abu Dhabi hosts Environment 2005 next week

Abu Dhabi will host the International Conference On Sustainable Transportation in Developing Countries from January 29 to February 2 under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre.

Organised by Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA) and General Exhibitions Corporation(GEC), the conference marks the first part of a chain of international activities to promote sustainable transportation in developing countries.

It will address policy issues related to sustainable transportation and the long-term objective is to contribute to the promotion of awareness of environmentally sustainable transportation (EST) and its linkages to the socio-economic, health and environment issues.

The event will bring together a diversified group of stakeholders involved in international, regional, national and local sustainable transportation policy formulation, funding, planning, programming, implementation, operation and evaluation of sustainable transportation systems.

This diverse group will include representatives from the public and private sectors in the fields of transportation, environment, health, energy and education. Representatives from various child and youth groups will also be invited as special observers.

The opening ceremony includes a keynote speech by Sheikh Khalifa followed by addresses by representatives from the UN, donors and private sector. Five specialized workshops directly related to the major themes and issues of the Conference, will be organised. An environmentally-sound technologies and their application will be demonstrated through a dedicated exhibition.

Among the papers to be discussed are: Sustainable Transportation in Developing Countries: Challenges and Prospects Environmental Policy and Transportation, Past, Present and Future Sustainable Transportation: Evolution, Principles and Guidelines Sustainable Transportation Challenges, The Experience of the Developed World Sustainable Transportation Challenges in Developing Countries Sustainable, Transportation Prospects, Socio-Economic and Environmental Gains, and Promotion of Sustainable Transportation: Role of Donors Regional/National EST Initiatives and Role of Funding Organisations.
