Abu Dhabi officials and Secretary Beckett discuss bilateral cooperation

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett held on Thursday with a number of officials in Abu Dhabi Emirate aimed at enhancing economic cooperation. The Abu Dhabi side was headed by Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.



In his opening remarks, Al Bowardi made a presentation on the vision of Abu Dhabi in the areas of education , healthcare, environment and sustainable development.



"As clearly spelt out by President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi is evolving an educational system to the international standards. We are doing this in partnership with renowned world's institutions of learning", said Al Bowardi.



The ultimate aim is bring up a creative generation that would be able to stand to the 21st century challenges, he said.



On healthcare, Al Bowardi briefed the British official that Abu Dhabi was offering quality services to both national and expatriates.



"As outlined by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the goal of Abu Dhabi is to attract distinguished specialists to serve in its hospital and also partner with reputed institutions", said Al Bowardi.



"Recently we set up a Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi partnership with the Imperial College in London. This is just one example of our partnership with reputed institutions in the world", he said.



Secretary Beckett was also briefed on the state of the UAE environment by Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi The economic vision of Abu Dhabi and its endeavours to diversify its economic resources was presented by Hussein Al Nowais, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Fund for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.



For her part, the British Foreign secretary lauded the progress of her country's relations with the UAE which she described as "Britain's major economic partner in the region, and among the top ten worldwide".



She also expressed hope that her current visit to Abu Dhabi would help consolidate bilateral cooperation. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
