Preparation is now at an advanced stage for Abu Dhabi's hosting of the 2005 Environment Conference and Exhibition on Sustainable Transport in developing countries. The conference, which is being organised jointly by the General Exhibitions Corporation and the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, ERWDA, opens on January 30 and ends on February 2.

According to Majid Al Mansouri, ERWDA Secretary General, the conference aims at contributing to the boosting of awareness on the importance of sustainable transport of the environment and its relations with social, economic, health and environmental issues.

He said under the directives of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Board Chairman of the ERWDA, invitations had been sent out environment, health and transport ministers from GCC, Arab and a number of foreign countries to attend this great event, which, he said, is aimed at achieving consensus on the principles of sustainable transport, adding that a number of experts and environment-related industrial firms had expressed great interest in participating in the international event.

He said the first edition of the conference was held in 2002 under the theme "Sustainable Development", while the second was held last year under the theme "Environment and Energy", adding that this year's edition will deal with sustainable transport in development countries.
