The Emirates Heritage Club plays a major role in reviving and preserving the heritage of the nation. The Club's main activity is to instil in the new generation the past, heritage and traditions of their forefathers. In line with the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his quest to preserve the history and heritage of the country, and to explore the bright horizons of the future, the club has been active in pursuing these objectives to highlight the paramount importance of the noble values, traditions and past of the country, which constitute the pillars of the nation's culture and national identity.



Established in 1997 under the directives and support of Sheikh Zayed, as an independent Body, under the chairmanship of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, the club is responsible for organising and developing heritage activities as well as conducting researches, studies and disseminating intellectual and cultural awareness in the country's heritage.



The directives of Sheikh Zayed aims at educating the young generation on these values, learn the differences in the past and present life style. Sheikh Zayed has repeatedly urged the youth of the nation to take interest in the history of the country and learn about the life of old generation,' Because those who are not aware of their past, will not be able to chart their present'.



Since its inception, the club has accomplished a variety of activities aimed at emphasising the importance of the forefathers heritage, organising exhibitions, old and new boats regatta, pearl and fishing diving in the traditional manners of the forefathers, sea and land picnics, besides establishing' the Heritage Village'. Al Samaliyah Island, which was built for heritage related activities, is an important venue for scholastic activities, such as, spring and summer camping, in addition to other activities.



Over 5,000 students pursue various sports, chess competitions, football tournaments and other traditional sports. Among the traditional sports organised by the club, is the annual camel race held in Suweihan annually, which attracts a large number of citizens. The club's activities include a scientific committee specialised in the environmental aspects.



The committee conducts environmental researches, aimed at protecting and developing the wildlife. The Committee has completed an environmental project at Al Ajban Area, as well conducting researches on vegetation plants in Al Samaliyah, and carried out a study on the chemical of the island's soil. It has also executed a project of importing plants from Egypt and Australia to be cultivated in the UAE.



Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Emirates Heritage Club, said that organising boats regatta aims at emphasising and reviving the heritage of the forefathers and implementing Sheikh Zayed's directives with regard to the preservation of heritage, adding that the periodical activities of the club reflects the importance the UAE gives to the historical, cultural and social aspects, and in emphasising the deep bonds between the society and sea in the past and the present.



'The club's records show that there are 10,000 UAE sailors holding membership who are active participants in the club's marine races', Sheikh Sultan added. Zayed Centre for History and Heritage located at Al Ain, is another venue for heritage activities. Its activities are aimed at promoting UAE heritage to enrich UAE culture.
