Afghan Vice President, Hidayat Amin Arsala, has praised President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his continuous support for the Afghan people during their most difficult time ever. Arsala, who received yesterday a delegation from the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, expressed deep satisfaction with the level of relations between the UAE and Afghanistan and reiterated the need to give a big boost to trade relations between the two countries.

He said the UAE's assistance to the Afghan people had gone a long way to alleviate the sufferings of his people in this difficult time. He prayed for more progress and prosperity for the UAE and its people, under the wise and able leadership of President Zayed. He welcomed the RCS plan to build the Zayed City complex in Kabul. He said the project will go a long way to ease the accommodation problem of a large number of poor and homeless Afghans.

He reiterated the need for the UAE to play an active role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Abdullah Mohammed Al Mahmoud, head of the UAE delegation, reviewed with the Vice President the assistance given and projects embarked upon in Afghanistan by the RCS. He pointed out that the Zayed City complex is made up of low-cost housing complex to provide shelter for Afghan refugees and the internally displaced persons, as well as for poor and needy Afghans who have no home of their own, in addition to a school, a clinic, a mosque, a public park and a number of water wells.

Meanwhile, the RCS and the Ministry of Housing and Town Development have signed a memorandum of understanding, MoU, based on which the ministry granted the RCS a large plot of land, measuring about 200,000 square metres, on the Kabul-Jalalabad road for the Zayed City housing project. Al Mahmoud, who signed the MoU on behalf of the RCS, said that the latter will contract specialised construction companies to handle the project, adding that the RCS will also supervise the distribution of the houses upon completion.

He pointed out that the gesture was in line with the directives of Sheikh Zayed and H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. It is also under the direct supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who is also the RCS Chairman, he said.
