During his visit to the UAE, Hamid Karzai, the Afghan interim leader, restarted official diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and the UAE by reopening the Afghan embassy on 11 February in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE stopped diplomatic relations with Afghanistan in September 2001, when the government severed relations with the former Taliban regime for its involvement in international terrorism.

The new ambassador will be Haji Rashid Uddin, the brother-in-law of assassinated Ahmed Shah Masood, the former Afghan defence minister and well-known guerrilla leader.

There are over 80,000 Afghans living in the UAE and thousands more who hold Pakistani passports who were affected by the closure of their embassy last September. The UAE gave them permission to legally remain in the country depite expired UAE visas and passports until the embassy was reopened.
