Afghanistan set to open embassy

Preparations are in full swing to officially reopen the Afghan Embassy in the capital and offer consular services to about 70,000 Afghan residents in the country. The new Charge d'Affaires, Rashid Uddin Mohammedi, is now in Kabul to put the final touches to the resumption of services at the embassy.

Mohammedi was the head of consular services at the embassy in Abu Dhabi during Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani's government. He and other staff members left the embassy and the country when former Taliban diplomats took charge of the diplomatic mission in 1997 after the UAE recognised the former Taliban regime. The other senior staff at the reopened embassy include former diplomat Syed Javed Hashemi, head of political and social welfare affairs.

Without giving a specific time, he told Gulf News the embassy will resume work soon, to end the problems faced by thousands of Afghans across the GCC states.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were resumed when Hamid Karzai officially declared the Afghan Embassy in the capital reopened on February 11 during his first official visit. (The Gulf News)
