Ajman Ruler calls for collective efforts to address global environmental challenges

More efforts are needed from scientific research circles to address challenges that harm the environment as a result of climate change and other foreign factors, H. H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Ajman, stressed yesterday.

'The environmental laws and legislations adopted by the UAE including the emirate of Ajman like the ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags and ban on smoking have raised the profile of the UAE at the international scene and made a shining model for addressing challenges facing the wildlife, nature and marine environment,' Sheikh Humaid said in a keynote address at the Ajman 1st International Conference on Sustainable Development and Green Environment.

The opening ceremony was attended by H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, Sheikh Ahmed bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Economic Development Department, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Humaid Al Nuami, Chairman of Ajman Department of Culture and Information, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and head of the conference, Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, and a number of Sheikhs, senior local officials and a group of environmentalists and researchers.

These legislations, he added, contribute significantly to advance development plans and adjust them as per environmental changes. He also highlighted the role of scientific research in serving environmental issues.

Sheikh Humaid later opened the exhibition staged on the fringe of the conference where 11 exhibitors are showcasing latest environmental-related technologies and services In address to the audience, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and head of the conference, elaborated on Ajman's policies and initiatives to conserve and protect the environment.

He said the conference has three main themes including: water, air and soil.

In the energy issue, he said the conference will discuss conventional energy resources, renewable energy resources, and production of energy from waste.

Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, lauded efforts being made by the emirate of Ajman in conserving the environment through its green initiatives and sustainable development which are in line with the federal government strategy.

He explained his ministry's efforts to develop and protect the environment in coordination with other stakeholders.

He cited the waste management and federal environmental data base as two remarkable projects in that respect.

Sheikh Humaid, Sheikh Ammar and Dr Rashid then signed the Ajman green declaration which caters for demands for improvement of performance within an environmentally-friendly society. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
