Al Ain to build new bridges and tunnels

Al Ain Municipality has earmarked Dh10 million to renovate four poorly maintained bridges.

New bridges and tunnels will also be built to accommodate the growing population of the region, and some roundabouts will be replaced with grade-separated, or underpass, junctions to increase traffic flow.

At Al Maslakha bridge, a group of engineers has already begun work. The expected completion date is July next year.

Other bridges currently undergoing work are Qalaat Al Muweigi, in Al Muweigi; Al Towayya in Al Towayya; and the InterContinental bridge in Al Nyadat.

Various problems with the bridges will be repaired, including damaged concrete, asphalt pavement and street lighting. The structures will also be weather-proofed.

The municipality said it was endeavouring to carry out the work while minimally disrupting commuters.

Saleh Al Shaiba Al Mazrouei, head of road maintenance at the municipality, said: "The roads and bridges maintenance section has the important duty of maintaining 40 major bridges and tunnels throughout Al Ain city. Already 15 bridges have been maintained in the past eight years and other deteriorated bridges are included in the next maintenance phases."
