Al Ain district launches recycling drive
posted on 21/12/2009

Hundreds of students joined hands to educate residents of an Al Ain district on waste recycling and distributed bins in a campaign organised by the Centre of Waste Management — Abu Dhabi.
The drive was launched in Al Masoudi district on Sunday morning. Some 250 volunteers from the universities and secondary schools in the Oasis City took part in the event.
An official of the centre said extensive arrangements were made before the campaign based on a study.
The district has 616 villas and an estimated population of 4,468. The area was divided into zones and volunteers visited every household.
The volunteers were from the Family Development Foundation, United Arab Emirates University, Abu Dhabi University, Al Ain University for Science and Technology and students from Al Zayediah, Al Manasir, Umm Kolthoom, Al Shiam and Al Qattara secondary schools.
Awareness
"They raised awareness among housewives and domestic helpers on the process of sorting waste into the green and black bins," said the centre's official. The bins were distributed to each household by the cleaning company responsible for North Al Ain Zone — (Lavajet).
The drive, he said, indicates the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the city and the safety of the environment, and to reduce the volume of waste.
The students also distributed flyers and stickers that bore toll free numbers.
The students also requested the householders to abide by the waste collection timing and to put the bins in front of their houses between 6 and 8pm at the latest for overnight waste collection by the cleaning company.
Black bins, allocated for non-recycled waste, will be collected on a daily basis and the green bin which contains recycled waste will be collected every Sunday and Thursday.
The Green and Bulky wastes will be collected according to a "on call" service. "We at the centre appreciate the students and teachers from Al Ain who have assisted us in the launching of this campaign and for the very important message they spread to the community," said the official.
"It was quite an experience and satisfied me for helping to promote awareness among the community," said Kulthoom Al Sa'adi, a female volunteer of the drive.
She said all her colleagues are also happy to participate in the community service initiative.
The waste recycling campaign had been planned for last week but the rain forced the centre to postpone the drive for a week. – Gulf News
