Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, ERWDA, and Head of the Scientific Committee of Environment 2005 Exhibition and Conference, has underlined the importance of Environment 2005 convention at yesterday's press conference held at the General Exhibition Corporation, GEC.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Al Mansouri said, this major environmental event to be organised by the General Exhibition Corporation, GEC, and ERWDA, will be attended by an elite of scholars, experts and researchers of environmental issues and sustainable transportation. A large number of health, environment, transportation ministers from t different countries will also attend the event, Al Mansouri added.

Al Mansouri pointed out that sustainable transportation is considered one of the significant elements of sustainable development and it could be achieved in the developing countries by adopting and translating into action its principles and concepts laid down by concerned global organisations, such as, institutions of the European Union, the World Bank, the UN Economic Development and Cooperation Organisation, etc.

'The developed countries had relatively succeeded in achieving several achievements in their endeavours towards sustainable transportation and had achieved advancement in disseminating principles of sustainable transportation, but the developing countries have a long way to go to achieve the same, due to lack of quality data and information regarding characteristics and effects of transportation systems, or lack and absence of coordination and cooperation between sectors of transportation, environment and health, as well as clear shortage in legislations, qualified cadre and institutions in the field of sustainable transportation and scientific research programmes in the sustainable transportation,' Al Mansouri added.
