The newly appointed 52-member National Consultative Council yesterday unanimously re-elected Abdullah Mohammed Al Masoud as the Council Speaker for another two-year term. The members elected Al Masoud during their first meeting of the First Ordinary Session of the 15th Legislative Chapter of the council after its inauguration by Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi's Executive Council.

The House also elected Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Muhairi as the Deputy Speaker of the council. The inaugural ceremony, at the Cultural Foundation, was attended by a number of Cabinet members, high-ranking officials from the Ministries of Defence and Interior, department officials and elite of the emirate. The 52 members, including six new, were appointed by Sheikh Khalifa in an Emiri decree under his capacity as the Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi Emirate. The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker was conducted during the council proceedings after the inauguration ceremony.

The NCC was established in 1971 under an Emiri decree issued by Sheikh Zayed as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The first NCC session was opened by Sheikh Zayed on October 2, 1971, which was attended by the government officials, Sheikhs and the elite. (The Gulf News)
