Minister of Health, Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Midfa, received Hama Arba Diallo, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD, who is currently on a visit to the UAE as part of his tour of the Gulf region. Al Midfa, who is also the Board Chairman of the Federal Environmental Agency, FEA, reviewed with his guest the efforts of the UAE, a signatory to the Convention, in combating desertification, an effort which has won the country worldwide respect from international environmental organisations.

The Minister said that the UAE was working hard to improve and further modernise its Anti-Desertification programme, through a special committee which include all concerned bodies in the country. He pointed out that the FEA had set up a national committee, charged with following up the Convention, adding that the FEA had hosted in 1996 a regional forum on the UNCCD. He also said that the UAE would host in May a ministerial conference of Asian member countries in the Convention. One hundred and eighty five countries have signed the Convention since it was open for membership in October 1994 in Paris.

Diallo said that his visit to the UAE was seeks to express to the UAE government the Convention's appreciation of the wise policy and approach of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in combating desertification, adding that the visit also seeks to inform UAE officials about developments in the Convention and to discuss with them the country's preparation towards the hosting of the May conference. Present at the meeting were Dr. Salim Al Misirri Al Dhahiri, FEA Director General and Dr. Sa'ad Al Numairi, FEA Counsellor. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
