New York - The UAE will present its country report on the Status of Women at the fifty-first session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women which will open here on today.

Speaking shortly after a meeting with Sheikha Haya Rashid Al Khalifa, Chairperson of the 61st Session of the UN General Assembly, UAE Minister of Social Affairs Maryam Al Roumi said she would present a country report, outlining the magnificent strides that the UAE women have made over the last three decades.

"We many achievements to pride ourselves. Recently we have had a huge women representation of 22% in the Federal National Council (FNC).

This representation is one of the highest compared to other countries," she said.

Al Roumi added that UAE women have made their presence felt in every fact of the socio-economic life of the country during the last 35 years, thanks to unfailing support of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The UAE under President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also provided every support to ensure smooth progress of women empowerment, she said. "UAE women are participating even in such hard and demanding fields as the Armed Forces", she said.

The Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women.
