Putrajaya - UAE State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammed Al Shaali has urged the Non-Aligned Movement to regain its credibility and play a more active role in international affairs. "The world of today is in a dire need for a revival of the values and principles of the Non-Aligned Movement", Al Shaali said. "The UAE believes that the Movement is still capable of playing a proactive role in enhancing international peace and security and in bringing international relations back into balance," he added.

Al Shaali was speaking at the opening of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau (NAM-CoB) Ministerial Meeting at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, on Monday.

He reiterated the UAE call to Iran for a peaceful settlement of the three islands conflict either through direct negotiations or by referring the matter to the International Court of Justice.

On Palestine, the Minister asserted that a durable and just peace in the Middle East would not be possible until the Palestinian people regains its legitimate rights and Israel withdraws from all the Palestinian territories it has been occupying since 1967, including Jerusalem, and from other territories, including Syria's Golan Heights and parts of Lebanon.

He called for declaring the Middle East and the GCC a region free of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons. He said Israel should be required to join the nuclear arms non-proliferation treaty and give the International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring access to its nuclear facilities in adherence to the UN resolutions.

On Iraq, Al Shaali welcomed the new Iraqi cabinet, and called for respecting Iraq's political choices and non-interference in its internal affairs. "We look forward to the convening of a national dialogue conference in Iraq to help restore national conciliation, stability and prosperity for our brothers in Iraq," he said.

The Minister called on the Movement's member-states to cooperate to curb terrorism. He expressed the UAE sympathy with Indonesia over the earthquake that had hit Java Island. He noted that President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan had ordered USUS$4 million worth of medicine and aid supplies for the victims.

On the other hand, Al Shaali also participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Seventy Seven and China, held yesterday on the sidelines of NAM-CoB Ministerial Meeting. The Minister will proceed Tuesday to China to head the Arab League side to the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum, a two-day meeting scheduled to open in Beijing on Wednesday.
