A UAE paper has said that the UAE and Egypt have historically strong relations and the visit of Field Marshal Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, to attend a joint military exercise, effectively highlights the depth of the bilateral ties.

"The special relationship between the two nations has continued to flourish," said The Gulf Today in its editorial on Thursday.

The editorial comment continued, "The Egyptian Ambassador to the UAE, Ehab Hammoda, stressed that the UAE's limitless support to Egypt contributed effectively to strengthening the capacity of the state to tackle foreign and internal challenges, especially the combat of terrorism, saying that he is proud to represent Egypt in the UAE, a country that has become a role model of development in a record time.

"The UAE has signed a US$4.9 billion framework agreement with Egypt to support its development programme and aimed at improving the living conditions, lives and human development of the Egyptian people through a number of projects.

"The support includes a grant of one billion dollars that was transferred to Egypt last July, and an additional allocation of more than one billion dollars to help provide Egypt with part of its fuel requirements, ensuring that the nation is able to maintain its economy, industry, trade and transportation infrastructure during this transitional phase.

"A historic agreement was also signed this week between Egypt's Ministry of Defence and the Arabtec Company to build one million residential units at a cost of US$40 billion, the biggest housing project in the Arab world," the paper added.

Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, had earlier said, "Supporting Egypt in this phase is service for the entire Arab World." His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, had also commented, saying, "A strong Egypt ensures a stable Arab world." The editorial concluded by saying, "The moral and financial backing extended by the UAE to Egypt is important not only because it is the biggest financial support provided by Arab countries, but also because it came early and in time when Egypt was in need. The eventual goal is to pursue efforts to ensure a more prosperous and progressive future for Egypt in particular, and the Arab world in general." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
