Spewing out a long trail of green, red, black and white smoke, F16s beckoned residents to the Capital’s beach area while the Mirage tried to steal the show away from the dancing sea water choreographed to sway and twirl to Arabic music.

The military fighter jets zoomed past in an impressive display of coordinated moves, startling the multitude that had gathered on Wednesday afternoon at the Abu Dhabi Corniche to take part in the four-day festival to celebrate the 40th UAE National Day “It was so great. It was splendid that the authorities put on these shows for us to appreciate and love the country more. I am loving being here at this momentous occasion,” enthused Claire McDonald, who came to the Corniche with her two boys.

The inaugural day at the beach also featured an exhibition of paragliders. Using the UAE flag as sails, they showed off a daring feat as they singly emerged from the break water to form a column and later glide towards the beach front in the early evening with only a torch to light their way.

“I want to fly like them,” pointed out little Ahmed, 5, who was dressed in his kandoura and with the UAE flag draped over his shoulders. He was accompanied by his parents who were waving their flag proudly.

On the ground and along the 1.7 kilometre stretch of the Abu Dhabi beach, various activities were happening simultaneously.

On the Imagination zone walkway was a showcase of imagery depicting the country’s culture and heritage and some of its achievements for the past 40 years.

On the Tradition zone were live events including a fashion show featuring the evolution of traditional dresses and its development, as well as, Emirati dance, dishes and handicrafts.

Local organic harvests such as honey, sugar cane and vegetables were also on display to educate and spread organic agriculture awareness and culture.Street performers were on site to greet and amuse spectators, while a kids corner featuring puppet shows, face painting and arts and crafts kept the little ones entertained. â€" Khaleej Times
