New York - The UAE Ambassador at the United Nations, Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al-Jarman, held a reception, which attracted a large number of dignitaries, including UAE Ambassador to the United States, Yusuf Mana bin Al-Otaiba and the Chief Executive of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber.

The reception aimed at galvanising support for the UAE's bid to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, a bid which is facing stiff competition from other countries, including few European countries.

In a keynote address, Al-Jarman warmly welcomed the guests, including UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, a number of his assistants, permanent ambassadors of member states of the UN, members of the IRENA, representatives of international and regional organisations, banking and other financial institutions, said the UAE has all it takes to host the headquarters of the IRENA, which is seeking to become a great force behind the efforts to move swiftly to the spreading of the sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide, adding that the establishment of IRENA based on the above objective is, in itself, a boost for international cooperation efforts and that is why the UAE will be happy to have the honour to host the headquarters of that international organisation.

The host country will be decided during the IRENA preparation committee meeting, scheduled for the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh in June.

Al-Jarman urged all countries yet to gain membership to the organisation to do so quickly to further boost the strength and reputation of the organisation. He reiterated the commitment of the UAE government to implement all the requirements of international law, international agreements and other related agreements on relations between a host country, the organisation and its members.

The Chief Executive of Masdar, Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, also delivered a short address in which he recounted the advantages of having the IRENA headquarters in Abu Dhabi, saying that Abu Dhabi's great capability will help influence the effect and achieve the objectives of the IRENA worldwide.

He assured the world that if giving the nod to host the IRENA headquarters, Abu Dhabi government will give the organisation the greatest care and support it needed to achieve its objectives. He cited the UAE's long term plan to boost its resources and expertise in the global renewable energy market towards its future technology and the UAE's commitment to boost its rate of dependence on renewable energy to 7 percent by 2020.

A video film on the UAE and its achievements and capabilities which make the country the best to host the IRENA headquarters was screened during the reception. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
