Cairo - The Arab League Council has hailed the quick response of a number of Arab countries, among others, UAE, to send relief aid to Somali people to help them from the drought and famine, which displaced about half of the population and affected 12 million people in the Horn of Africa region.

The council stressed the need for stepping up the relief efforts in the Horn of Africa through mobilising the civil societies and private sector in the Arab world to contribute in the relief operations.

It reiterated in the conclusion of its emergency meeting on the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa and Somalia to speed up coordination of the Arab League with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and African Union. The council also called for holding of an urgent international conference to chalk out work plan to tackle the famine.

The Arab League Secretary General Dr Nabil Al Arabi delivered a speech in the inaugural session in which he called for the Arab world and international community to address the catastrophe. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
