UAE Foreign Minister, Rashid Abdullah, has said that Arab foreign ministers have shown great understanding to UAE's just demand for the return of its three islands, being occupied by Iran. Abdullah said that the ministers, during their deliberation on the islands' issue expressed full support for the UAE's rights and efforts to regain control of the islands of Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. They urged Iran to seriously consider returning the three islands to their rightful owner.

In a statement to the Emirates news Agency, WAM, Abdullah said that the ministers had praised the kind gesture by President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to clear the landmines in Southern Lebanon, adding that the draft of the summit's communiqué praises Sheikh Zayed and the UAE on this gesture, which the UAE is undertaking in collaboration with the Lebanese government and the United Nations Organisation.

He pointed out that the draft communiqué also contains, on the economic side, an appreciation of the UAE for being chosen to host the first Arab Forum on Information Technology and Telecommunications, adding that the ministers had also referred to Arab leaders meeting at the summit a draft resolution on preparation for the 2nd Earth Summit, to be held next year in South Africa, asking for their blessings for the Abu Dhabi Declaration, which deals with the future of environmental works in Arab countries, to be adopted as a strategic method of environmental work in Arab countries in the 21st century. On the situation in the Iraqi-Kuwait issue, Rashid Abdullah said that the issue had been left to the Arab leaders to see how best they can handle it. "But I do not rule out the possibility of the issue being referred back to us (foreign ministers),” he said, adding that efforts were being made to ensure a compromise on the issue.

He pointed out that Arab countries have shown understanding to Kuwait's fears and the its demand for the release of its prisoners of war, about some of its people missing in action, the return of its looted properties and the need to ensure Kuwait's security and sovereignty, adding that Arab countries have also shown understand to Iraq's call for the lifting of the ten-year old UN sanctions and the cessation of all forms of military actions and hostilities against it.

He said that the summit will give total support to the Palestinian issue and the "Intifada" and will demand from the sponsors of the peace process and from European countries to look seriously into the issue of providing international protection for the Palestinians and their rights in the light of the current situation when the peace process has grounded to a complete halt as a result of the intransigent stand of the new Israeli government, adding that the summit will also deal with the threats and pressure on Syria and Lebanon by the Israelis.
