Arab Women Media Forum to portray true role of women in development

The Arab Women Media Forum (AWMF) is seeking to improve image of Arab women and mirror a true perspective of women's engagement in national development, according to Director of Arab Women Centre for Training and Research in Tunisia. The AWMF will be organised by the UAE General Women's Union in co-operation with the Arab League General Secretariat, National Women Council (Egypt) and Al Hariri Foundation (Lebanon), on February 2 and 3. ' The number of Arab media women is on steady increase, but, their access to decision-making is still limited,' said Dr. Sakina Borawi, in an interview to the 'Durat Al Emarat' magazine to be published by the Abu Dhabi Women's Society early next month. She said that despite the remarkable progress made on the area of women development, more efforts are desperately needed to stop expected deterioration of women conditions under globalisation. ' Women account for 25 per cent of the total Arab workforce - the lowest rate worldwide - and there are only 11 ministerial portfolios occupied by women out of 600 in the Arab world. Women represent 63 per cent of the 68 million Arab illiterates,' she noted. She added that her centre was planning in cooperation with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) to launch a network on Arab women and media. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
