The General Secretary of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Abdul Rahman Al Atiyya, has expressed happiness on and satisfaction with the role the UAE is playing in moving forward the joint works of the Gulf Cooperation Council, GCC.

In an exclusive statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Atiyya, who was received yesterday by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during which he briefed the UAE President on preparations for the holding of the 7th Consultation meeting of GCC leaders, said he had briefed Sheikh Khalifa on the issues his office intended to put forward to the GCC leaders during the summit that would be held in the Saudi Capital, Riyadh, next Saturday, particularly the issues of boosting economic, security and social cooperation among the GCC member countries.

Atiyya said that he had listened to the UAE President's directives, which he described as very comprehensive and full of wisdom, on how best to enhance and activate joint cooperation, adding that they had discussed the future of the GCC and developments in the region.

He said he had expressed to the UAE President his pride on the pivot role the UAE, under the able leadership of Sheikh Khalifa, continues to play to move forward GCC joint work. This, he said, he believed stems from Sheikh Khalifa's deep belief on the significance of the GCC as a strong bloc which is mobilising the resources of member countries and boosting their group influence to direct events and developments in the region.

Atiyya cited the historic role played by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan in the establishment of the GCC, which was launched in Abu Dhabi.

He said on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the founding of the GCC, which coincides on Wednesday, May 25, that the launching of the GCC march in Abu Dhabi on May 25, 1981, was a good omen for the GCC countries, which, he said, will never forget Sheikh Zayed, who did not relent any effort in supporting joint GCC works for the general benefit of all the six member countries and their peoples.

He said the peoples of the region are looking forward to the Abu Dhabi Summit, scheduled for December, during which the GCC leaders will discuss important issues of joint cooperation, including political, economic, commercial, security, defence, educational and social cooperation.
