Baku - President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan said yesterday the UAE's move to open a diplomatic mission in Baku would contribute to making a qualitative leap in the prospects of joint economic and investment cooperation and strengthen channel of communications between business communities in the two friendly countries.

The Azeri leader commended the UAE wise policy and its socio-economic development.

'The UAE is an advanced model for socio-economic development and economic diversification. It is a pacemaker in development of infrastructure, desalination and transport projects, President Aliyev said during talks with visiting UAE Minister of Economy HE Sultan Al Mansouri, which focused on ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation relations and re-energising action of the joint ministerial committee to enable it turn projects in transport, telecommunications, energy, water desalination into reality.

He expressed his country's desire to tap experiences of UAE in economic diversification in regard to GDP due to the fact that the Azeri economy is driven by oil and gas. He said his country is particularly interested in benefiting from the UAE water desalination model as the riverless country needs to meet growing demand for water.

"The two countries have promising prospects for further developing their bilateral economic relations, he added. The Azeri leader briefed his UAE guest about the economic developments in his country. For his part, the UAE minister affirmed the UAE keenness to boost its economic cooperation with Azerbaijan and stressed the vital importance of removing all obstacles hindering progress of joint cooperation. According to him, there are huge potentials for increasing trade exchange through extensive air transport traffic.

He said the private sector in both countries could be stimulated to set up joint ventures.

Progress of relations between the two countries was crowned in 2006 when Abu Dhabi and Baku inked an agreement for economic, trade and technical cooperation. Since that time two-trade exchange has been growing steadily at 7 per cent per year to reach US$282 million by 2007 of which US$280 million were UAE exports.
