Work is now well advanced on building the first of the six Baynunah class corvettes for the UAE Navy by the Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB). The project, the Middle East's largest naval construction, is on schedule.

The 72 metre corvettes are a unique class of warship with multi-mission capabilities including coastal patrol and surveillance, mine detection, helicopter operations, as well as anti-air and anti-surface capabilities, and will use the latest in weapons and sensor technology.

They will be the largest steel-hulled naval vessels ever built that will use only water jet propuslion. The vessels are being built in association with one of ADSB's strategic partners, Constructions Mechanique de Normandie (CMN) of France.

Building of the first vessel is being undertaken at CMN's Cherbourg yard, while the remaining corvettes are being built in the ADSB yard in Mussaffah, Abu Dhabi. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
