Bigger Finnish presence at IDEX 2001

Finland has planned a much bigger presence at IDEX 2001 and 15 Finnish defence industry companies are participating in the major international event, according to General Ilkka Hollo, Chief of Staff of the Finnish Armed Forces. "Finnish defence industry companies consider IDEX as one of the most important defence exhibitions in the world and by far the most important in the Middle East region.

Proof of the importance of IDEX is the fact that all major Finnish manufacturers have participated in the exhibition since the second IDEX,” General Hollo said, an interview to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). The Finnish companies are exhibiting products indoors and outdoors, ranging from Sisu 6x6 high mobility tactical vehicle to Amos advanced mortar system, underwater surveillance systems, telescopic masts, CWA detection systems as well as bullet proof vests and other ballistic protection products, he said.

"This is the fourth time that Finland is participating in IDEX, the latest edition of which is scheduled to begin on March 18 at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre. General Hollo referred to the excellent political relations between the UAE and Finland, as well as other GCC states, which could form a solid base for further development of relations in the field of defence and military matters. Finland is also willing to enter into more regular dialogue in various defence and military technological matters with the GCC states,” he said. He pointed also out that in recent years, representatives of the UAE Armed Forces have visited Finland several times.

General Hollo said that traditionally Finland has been active in peace keeping operations, the Middle East and Gulf included and has provided peace keeping training for representatives from over 30 countries at its UN Training Centre in Niinisalo, recently renamed as the Finnish Defence Forces International Centre (FINCENT). "We are prepared to offer this training also to the GCC states,” he said.

Finland will continue to be present in defence exhibitions in the Gulf region to demonstrate its sophisticated defence products and know-how and exchange useful information on defence material, he said. Finnish defence industry is rather small in the international defence technology market, so it can only have a role in narrow segments of the market, with highly specialised products, important samples of which will be exhibited at IDEX 2001, General Hollo said.
