A large fire broke out on Monday morning in an electrical shop and spread to seven other shops and warehouses.
The fire started at 7.30am at an electrical shop in Industrial Area 6, and there were no reports of any casualties or injuries.
According to Major Marwan Bu Afra, Director of Fire Brigades in Sharjah, a total of five electrical shops and three warehouses were gutted as a result of the fire.
A fireman at the scene said it was most likely that the fire started in one shop and then quickly expanded and spread to the other nearby shops, and that the fire was probably caused by an electrical short circuit.
The estimated cost of the loss was not available.
The fire was brought under control by 10am but large clouds of black smoke were visible throughout the morning.
A car wash facility was also partially burnt in the fire.
According to shopkeepers in the area, the affected warehouses contained televisions, refrigerators and washing machines. "When I arrived to open my shop at 9am, I saw the fire blazing and the smoke was so spread out that it could have easily been seen from Dubai. I was worried that the fire would get bigger because all the goods are electrical items, but thank goodness it was controlled in time," said Othman, owner of Atha Al Madina Restaurant. – Gulf News
