To mark the 31st National Day, the Zayed Centre for Co-ordination and Follow-Up (ZCCF) has published a book titled 'Leaders in the History of the UAE'. The book is a biography of the first generation of rulers of emirates, including Their Highnesses late Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, late Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Mualla, Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain, and late Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, who laid the foundations for the future of the UAE with their sustained efforts, according to reports in the UAE's dailies.

These great leaders together with their brother rulers wrote the first glorious pages of the UAE history and worked hard to draw the outlines of the future of the UAE. The study reviews the conditions prevailing in the region in general and the UAE in particular before the union. It sheds light on the imperialistic designs that aimed at encouraging division and disunity. It also covers the various aspects of struggle and resistance to any foreign hegemony and the efforts of these emirates to liberate their land till they succeeded in achieving independence. The idea of unity was born out of the historical, geographical, cultural, ideological and demographic components the bind these emirates together.

Then came the 1968 Declaration with the bilateral agreement between His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, and their invitation to other rulers to join the union. Their efforts were crowned with success and the United Arab Emirates was declared as an independent sovereign country on Dec.2, 1971. It has an added humanitarian dimension, with some personal accounts and anecdotes by the leaders themselves, on their lives prior to and after the formation of the federation.
